   Overview:
This Continuing Medical Education program is accredited for 1 hour in Category 1 credit towards the AMA Physicians Recognition Award and is intended for Primary Care Physicians involved in the treatment and care of patients who are at risk for depression. While major depression may be the only illness the patient has, it may also occur in patients with other medical conditions and in this case is referred to as a co-morbid condition. It is important to diagnose and manage co-morbid depression in patients with diabetes and coronary artery disease due to the potential higher risk of mortality. This educational program includes an overview of diagnosing co-morbid major depression, associated indicators, screening tests, antidepressant treatment strategies, dosages and drug-drug interactions. Handouts may be downloaded and include transcripts, slides and accompanying graphics and animation files.

   Overview:

   Overview:
This Continuing Medical Education program is intended for Primary Care Physicians involved in the treatment and care of patients who are obese. Obesity occurs with increased incidence in certain medical conditions. It is important to manage the health and promote behavioral change in obese patients due to the potential higher risk of co-morbid conditions. This activity includes an overview of obesity, health risks related to overweight and obesity, the importance of behavior for the prevention and management of chronic disease, the importance of the science and practice of health behavior change for entire patient populations, weight as a multiple-behavior change challenge, treating over-weight and obese adults, preparing patients for additional treatments if needed, treatment with children and adolescents, preparing youth for additional treatments if needed and treatment with patients with co-morbidity. James Prochaska, MD

James O. Prochaska, Ph.D. is Director of Cancer Prevention Research Consortium and Professor of Clinical and Health Psychology at the University of Rhode Island. He is the author of over 100 publications, including three books, Changing for Good, Systems of Psychotherapy and The Transtheoretical Approach. He is internationally recognized for his work as a developer of the stage model of behavior change. He is the principal investigator on over $50 million dollars in research grants for the prevention of cancer and other chronic diseases.

In addition, he has served as a consultant to the American Cancer Society, Centers for Disease Control, Health Maintenance Organizations, National Health Service of Great Britain, major corporations and numerous universities and research centers. Dr. Prochaska has won numerous awards including the Top Five Most Cited Authors in Psychology from the American Psychology Society and an Honorary Chair of Medicine from the University of Birmingham, England. He is an invited speaker at many regional, national and international meetings and conferences.
